Belle Hamilton is a romantic at heart. She's engaged to the love of her life and dreams of marriage, children and a happily ever after. Belle’s world is close to perfect until one afternoon she makes a decision she can't take back.
In the blink of an eye, Belle’s life spirals out of control. She loses everything that is dear to her and is forced to flee to the other side of the world where she meets Andrea, a local bartender from Rome, and develops an unexpected connection with him.
Can they break through the complications of past hurts and a long-distance relationship to make it work or will one terrifying night in Paris end it before it had a chance to begin?
She knocked on the front door and held her breath. She could hear muffled voices on the other side. The door opened and Ben stood in the entryway, startled.
‘Belle? What are you doing here?’ His voice was a whisper as he stole a nervous glance back inside the house, then closed the door behind him. ‘You shouldn’t be here,’ he said to her.
‘We need to talk, Ben.’
He reached for her hand and led her down the path to the front gate, out to the BMW, where he leant against the shiny polished exterior, stealing skittish glances back toward the house.
He was in blue jeans and a white Ralph Lauren polo shirt. He was barefoot, his hair soft and brown, his deep blue eyes the colour of the ocean, eyes that she could still get lost in, even after all these years. He ran a hand over his smooth jawline and he smelt of Gucci Guilty. Somewhat fitting.
‘Why have you been ignoring me?’ she asked.
‘Oh, besides the fact that you bombarded me with a thousand calls last night?’ he retorted.
Belle straightened her shoulders. ‘That’s unfair. I was upset. Can you blame me?’
He sighed. His shoulders sagged and he held up his hands in apology. ‘No, you’re right. Sorry. I shouldn’t have said that.’ He looked down at the ground. ‘I guess I didn’t know what to say to you. I didn’t mean for you to walk in on us like that. It’s not how I wanted you to find out.’
‘Who is she?’
‘Her name is Olivia.’
‘How long has it been going on?’
‘A month, maybe two. I don’t know,’ he said to the ground, his big toe playing with a pebble on the grass.
‘You shouldn’t have gone to see my father this morning. You should’ve spoken to me first.’
He smiled; a boyish smile that still melted her heart. ‘I’m sorry. It’s just that I wanted your dad to know what I’d done. I wanted to be the one to tell him. You’re right, though. I should’ve talked to you first.’
‘So, let’s talk.’
