Excerpt

“I’m afraid my granddaughter has forgotten her manners,” Nana said, sticking out her hand. “You must be Beau.”

I clenched my jaw. Her casual mention of his name, as if his identity was the most obvious thing in the world, had to have made it clear I’d been talking about him. That was the last thing I wanted him to know. Still, it was too late to change it. “Sorry, Beau, this is my nana, uh, Kelly Reede.”

“Nice to meet you, Mrs Reede. I can see where Phoebe got her enchanting eyes.”

“It’s Ms actually. It has been ever since I left my husband for his constant cheating.”

I wanted the ground to tear apart and swallow me whole. For half a second, I debated trying to fake a sudden and unexpected emergency just to get out of the room. She’d stuck with Granddad for a long time after the first time he’d cheated, but with Dad’s help had eventually found the strength to leave. After that, her confidence had only blossomed and she’d grown more and more like Dad all the time. Now, she often said the thoughts that crossed her mind without thinking through all of the consequences.

Beau’s eyes narrowed. “Well, I guess it’s not just the eyes that run in the family,” he muttered under his breath. He shook off the mood an instant later. “It was lovely to meet you, Ms Reede. It’s always nice getting any insight into our Phoebe. She’s a bit of an enigma.”

It was Nana’s turn to frown as her gaze spun to me. “That’s odd, because we’ve always found her to be a straight shooter, just like her Dad.”

“Maybe it’s just us guys she likes to play ’round with.”

My hands found my hips. “Maybe she’s in the fucking room and you should both stop talking about her like she’s not.”

“Phoebe!” Nana exclaimed.

Beau’s gaze was fixed on me, his lips curled up into a snarl. He dropped the expression a second later when he turned back to Nana. “Don’t worry about it, Ms Reede. I’m used to her gutter mouth. She’s turned it on me often enough. Haven’t ya, darlin’?”

I wanted to turn it on him again. My fingers clenched and unclenched at my side. “If there’s nothing else you wanted, I think we’ll be going now.”

“Actually, I was hopin’ to have a word or two with ya alone.” Beau’s gaze turned from me back to my nana. “If ya don’t mind. It won’t take a minute.”

I could feel Nana’s gaze passing between Beau and me. “Not at all,” she said after a moment. “I’ll go sign myself out and wait in the car.”

It would have been so much easier if she’d said no. If she’d demanded my undivided attention while she was in the country. Instead, a minute later I was face-to-face with Beau.

Alone.

Author Bio
Michelle Irwin has been many things in her life: a hobbit taking a precious item to a fiery mountain; a young child stepping through the back of a wardrobe into another land; the last human stranded not-quite-alone in space three million years in the future; a young girl willing to fight for the love of a vampire; and a time-travelling madman in a box. She achieved all of these feats and many more through her voracious reading habit. Eventually, so much reading had to have an effect and the cast of characters inside her mind took over and spilled out onto the page.

Michelle lives in sunny Queensland in the land down under with her surprisingly patient husband and ever-intriguing daughter, carving out precious moments of writing and reading time around her accounts-based day job. A lover of love and overcoming the odds, she primarily writes paranormal and fantasy romance.

REVIEW TOUR, EXCERPT, & #GIVEAWAY - Home Free (Sierra Legacy #4) by Claire McEwen

GENRE:

Contemporary Romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
His first taste of freedom was only the beginning…
Arch Hoffman has paid for his crimes. All he wants is to come home to rural California and start over. He's not looking to be a hero when he rescues a wedding cake from hitting the dirt at the ranch next door. But culinary artist Mandy Allen's irresistible smile makes him glad to save the day—and thankful that they're neighbors.
Mandy's just the distraction Arch needs. Her sweet voice quiets the memories that threaten his chance to be a better man, and he's determined to help her confront her fears. But the past is its own prison, and even love might not be enough to set them free.
 “Arch!”
He turned, surprised, and saw Mandy hurrying after him. In her hand was a paper plate piled high with an enormous slice of cake. He started back toward her, admiring how elegant she looked in that wine-colored dress.
“You saved it. You earned a slice.” She was a little out of breath, like she’d jogged, cake and all, to catch him.
Arch tried to remember the last time someone had reached out to show him a kindness like this—he couldn’t. The plate was heavy in his hand, she’d put so much cake on it. “You’re a good person.” He blurted it out like an awkward kid. He had no experience with generosity.
“I just made a whole lot of cake.” Her smile was fleeting but kind.
“Well, this will make the walk home a whole lot better.”
There was silence while they looked at each other. Total strangers who’d done each other a good deed today, and maybe found a small seed of friendship. He needed to let her get back to her sister’s wedding. “Nice to meet you, Mandy. Thanks for sticking up for me back there.”
“Of course.” She took a step back and waved “Welcome home, Arch.”
It was more of a welcome than he’d ever, in his most wishful dreams, hoped to get. He watched her walk lightly back up the drive, her full skirt swaying right down to the tops of her pretty brown cowboy boots. She was much more than a fairy like Tinker Bell. She was a guardian angel. A vision from heaven.
He looked down at the plate she’d brought him. White cake, chocolate cake, a few different kinds of icing. The first mouthful was a revelation of sugar and cream. He closed his eyes and tried to absorb the flavors. To savor such a fine taste. She might have heaped his plate, but her kindness today was sweeter than any cake. And he would never, ever get enough of sweetness like that.
Independent Reviewer for Archaeolibrarian - I Dig Good Books!
It took me along time to actually get in to this book but when I started I couldn't stop it's a good read but I will point out that at the beginning of every paragraph or new chapter the font was a bit weird as it started with a capital letter and then the font was a different size to the rest of the words sorry but I have to point that out.
But the characters blended well together.
When arch got out of prison after handing himself in ten years ago he didn't know who to go to in the end he went back to his old town where his welcome was not friendly after he did the most stupid things when he was younger but after going to find his brother wade and sister Nora he found out wade was getting married and he spotted this young woman called Wendy.
Wendy has to look after the ranch while her sister Lori goes on her honeymoon with wade she is afraid of the cattle and the horses as she has a dark secret but in time she confines in arch and he tells her it's not her fault then she starts to find her love of horses again.  Wendy wants to start her own bakery up but she is afraid?
Will arch and Wendy ever have a happy ending and bring each other out of there slump or will they just break each other and go there separate ways?
Logan took in the flirtatious grin on Connell’s face and felt her face get even redder than it already was. None of Michel’s most practiced moves had ever turned her on as much as one smile from this man. He was carnal sin on two legs.
Except he prefers four.
Narrowing her eyes, she reminded herself how much she disliked Weres. She schooled her expression. “Something tells me you’re used to handling yourself just fine,” she said with a meaningful glance at his groin region.
Her voice was sweeter than sugar, but her insinuation didn’t put him off. Instead, his smile deepened, and she was suddenly in danger of not being able to catch her breath.
“Are you sure?” he teased.
“Bathroom’s up the stairs, first door on the right.” She pointed, all business.
Connell backed away with a long, lingering look. He was wearing that panty-melting smile when he turned and headed up the stairs.
“Don’t forget to check the soles of your feet too,” she called after him, her voice perfectly even. Once he was gone, Logan let out a long, hard breath. Damn, that man was hot.
She wished she had taken Michel up on one his many offers to take her to bed. Recent sex might have acted as a shield against Connell’s supercharged pheromones.
Well, you didn’t sleep with him, and there’s no point regretting that now.
Sighing, she dematerialized, heading outside for a quick trip to the air currents. It was better than a cold shower any day.
RELEASE DAY & REVIEW - Raene and the Three Bears (The Alder Tales #2) by R.S. McCoy
Add to Goodreads  |  BookLikes
Genre:
Paranormal, Romance, Fairy Tale
Synopsis:
A golden-haired beauty with a tiger totem, Raene Randal is powerless to stop the dissolution of her life. Her uncle and best friend, Kaide, is sending her away for good. While Raene knows his actions are fueled by the sudden and unexplained loss of his bride, Blossom, that doesn’t change the fact that her future is certain. As the niece of a Pyro politician, it’s Raene’s duty to cross the realm and fulfill her marriage arrangements with an Alderwood Bear Clan.
The rest of her life is mapped out, but Raene has one choice left: to choose a husband from the sons of the Bear Clan’s leader—too bad she’s not interested in any of them. She knows her duty, but so far from her home and everyone she knows, Raene finds keeping her promises harder than she ever thought.
On the far side of the realm, Blossom knows nothing of Kaide’s implosion or Raene’s departure. She’s trapped in the Aero city at the whim of Syndicate Mercer. As much as she tries to adapt to her aerial totem and her new role within the Aero branch, Blossom knows it’s only a matter of time before she sees Kaide again, but this time, she’ll be his enemy.
5 out of 5 (exceptional)
Raene and the Three Bears is the second book in The Alder Tales by R.S. McCoy, and is a fantastic addition to the series. Whilst being a complete story (for Raene), you also hear how Blossom and Kaide are getting on, so I would say that you HAVE to read book 1 first. The only question I have is why wouldn't you?!
As part of the agreement for Blossom to go with Kaide, Raene has to go to the Bear Clan. However, Kaide made sure that the choice of her husband would be Raene's. Out of the three brothers, one is already married, but Raene still has the choice, as explained by Da.
O.M.G!!! Seriously, every book by R.S. McCoy should come with a kindle warning as I don't think my kindle will survive! This is the second time I've been absolutely entranced in this series, devouring every word, every page; completely engrossed and invested in the story.
I won't give out any spoilers, and I won't even mention the hints about who the 'stars' of the next book and what I think their story might be. All I will say, is that this book is exceptionally well written, with a clear and concise political structure (as far as anything political can be). The world building as a whole, with the different ways of living for each 'branch', is amazing. The characters continue to keep me on the edge of my seat, as they grow and become more than expected.
I really can't recommend this book, or the series, highly enough. Simply stunning, and I can't wait to continue with this series.
NBTM, EXCERPT, GUEST POST, & #GIVEAWAY - The Moonlight Market by Aidee Ladnier
GENRE:
LGBTTQ, Fantasy & Paranormal, New Adult
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

College senior Cory Long tracked his missing sister to the magical Moonlight Market to bring her home. Instead, he found a disorienting world of performers and hawkers, bizarre sights and sounds, and one very familiar showman, Sanderson Beets. Like a drowning man, he latched onto Sanderson, trusting him to navigate the twists and turns of the Market as unerringly as he had steered Cory to passion in their furtive trysts on campus.

But Sanderson was tired of being the quickie in the alley.

Sanderson Beets had escaped the Moonlight Market to attend college, hoping to settle into a normal life, maybe meet someone and fall in love. To obtain that new life he made a dangerous bargain. And when the sinister woman known as the Weaver of Dreams is involved, second chances always come with strings attached…and sacrifices. Sanderson’s debt has come due, and the only payment he has to offer is Cory, and their chance at a relationship.

He almost ignored it.

Almost.

Tiny bells tinkled nearby.

They sounded closer.

His skin tightened with goose bumps.

Niari glided into the pool of light cast by the lantern hanging on the back of the tent. Her long, inky dress brushed the bells on her ankles and pulled the shadows forward with her.

“Your debt is coming due.” Her trilling, accented voice floated over the noise from the fairway beyond. In front of the tent children giggled and laughed, the calliope blared out its joyous concert, and the lanterns burned away the darkness. But Sanderson stood in the shadows behind…with her.

Sweat coated his palm, and it slipped from the curtain. He swiped at the bead of perspiration on his upper lip, the pit of his stomach icing into a lump.

“I found someone.” He blurted out the words. “A lost soul. Someone who’s lost something.”

Panic bloomed in Sanderson’s chest. Was he actually going to offer Cory to the Weaver? Cory who just wanted to find his missing sister. Cory of the soft hair, bitable nipples, and beautiful, slim cock. Who made Sanderson feel normal. Like a regular guy.

“Good.” Her smile widened, filled with too many tiny teeth that gleamed bright in the lantern light. “Are they tasty and ripe?”

“Madame?” Sanderson’s gut twisted at the hard glitter in her eyes. A chill crept down his spine. She looked…hungry.

He blinked. Niari stood before him, still and silent, waiting, just a woman again. The malevolent flash must have been a trick of the dim light. He shrugged off the unease and shook the numbness from his fingers.

Five Favorite Wordsby Aidee Ladnier

Despite my mother assuring me that my first favorite word was "No," I've cultivated a few more over the years and tried to understand what it is about a word that is so attractive. A favorite word of mine has to meet several criteria:
  • It has to accurately capture a thought in my head
  • It has to sound like the thing it means to me
  • It has to feel good in my mouth
Most words are able to capture thoughts. We actually use words to disseminate and share information. Words are vital to how humans have lived and learned for thousands of years. So the first thing on my list—most words are able to do this. One of my favorite examples of this is the word "insouciant." It means "showing a casual lack of concern." In other words, it doesn't mean careless because that would mean the insouciant person was taking chances. It doesn't necessarily indicate malice, just that the person is not concerned. But it does mean that the person has a certain confidence in their lack of concern—like someone who hasn't yet seen enough of the world to be afraid or someone with enough power to know the world cannot hurt them. There is something playful and powerful about being insouciant.

My next standard a favorite word must meet is that it sound like the thing it means to me. Of course all onomatopoetic words fit this bill. Some of my favorite words are imitations of actual sounds around me--like "zoom" or "cuckoo".  But I also like words that don't necessarily seem at first glance to sound like what they represent--like Love.  Saying the word "love" starts out with opening your mouth and ends with your lips and teeth meeting. This sounds to me like the word version of a hug: you open your arms and then close them around the person you love.

And this leads to the last thing a favorite word should do--it should feel good in my mouth. Just as I write words on paper or keyboard, words are also an essential spoken form of communication. I want a favorite word that I speak to be lively and pop out of my mouth excited--like the word "apple pie". There's something fun in the repetition of the "p" and the strange "le" construction or maybe in the sighing finish of the "ie." I love saying "apple pie" just as much as I love eating it.
