NBtM, EXCERPT, REVIEW, & #GIVEAWAY - Rebellion (A Titan Romance #1) by Rowan Bishop

Science Fiction Romance

Akyra Roux is an up-and-coming Security Operations commander: ambitious, dedicated, and fearless. Her soldiers have a reputation for getting the job done and cracking skulls, earning her a perilous mission to the far fringes of the galaxy.

As soon as she lands, however, Akyra learns the hard way that rival factions have a lot to gain by seeing her fail, no matter what the cost…

Captain Raemus Petrus is the hunky, charismatic leader of the genetically-engineered Titans stationed at the outpost. He has a job to do and battles to fight, and he doesn’t let anything get in his way. However, when Akyra and her team of hot-blooded females land on the planet, his need to protect her and his duty to betray her collide…

Can Raemus, engineered to be ruthless, prove he has enough humanity buried inside his heart to salvage his honor, save Akyra, and ultimately prove his ability to love?

Can Akyra, running from her past, learn to lose control of the one thing holding her back, her own heart?

“You’d give all this up?” Raemus pointed to the cluttered mess of the vehicle maintenance shed they’d been facing the whole time, “for a family?”

Akyra shrugged. “Family isn’t an option anymore.” She rubbed the birth control bolt deep in the skin of her shoulder, the one engineered with a homing beacon that would bring arrest, conviction, and death if removed from her body. “Being really good at fighting for The Church is all I got.” She felt pressure behind her eyes, and her nose began to itch, but she shook it off. “That’s why I’m the best commander I can be.” Akyra rubbed her hands against the intensifying cold. “What’s your excuse?”

Raemus didn’t miss any signs of sadness spreading over Akyra’s body, the slight slouch, the successive blinks, the three irregular deep breaths. “I’m with you,” he said. “I get it. When shooting bad guys gets you through the day, might as well become the best at it.”

She laughed through the frog in her throat. “Yes. Exactly.”

“Well, let’s see… I can let you shoot Levi over there if that’ll make you feel any better.”

She blurted out a big laugh.

Her smile! Raemus thought. Rich and honest. So… real.

3 out of 5 (good)

Akyra is commander of a unit tasked with delivering a very valuable bio-cube. And she is a pure bred human female. Raemus is Titan, a genetically engineered soldier, leader of a unit set out to ambush said bio-cube and kill the humans. But someone beats him to to it, and the Thunder company become the escorts the Banshees had been expecting. But there are bigger forces at work, than either of them realise, and Akyra and Raemus are faced with rejecting everything they have ever known, to keep their growing prohibited love.

okay, so!

From what I can see this is a first time author, and, in some places it shows. HOWEVER, I really did like this one. This 3 star rating is not, in any way shape or form, a bad thing, not here. Sometimes, yes, but not here.

I really liked how Bishop played Raemus. I loved how I did not get it, til it was told, what he was really up to. I loved the way the other members of Thunder and Banshee companies have laid their stories out, already.

I did get a bit lost when the prophecy was first mentioned, kinda like it was thrown in, but it all came out okay.

The book comes with an explicit sexual content warning. But it didn't seem overly explicit to me.  Granted, Akyra and Raemus first joining is very public, and it does carry some steam, but I wouldn't give it the explicit warning. Maybe I just read too much smut!

I'd love to follow this series, and indeed this author, to see what happens to the other couples, and the general story arc. Also to see how the author develops her skill. Love watching new authors grow!

3 solid stars

4 out of 5 (very good)

Rebellion is the first book in the Titan Romance series, and tells the story of Akyra - a purebreed human female who been told that she has a genetic defect which stops her from becoming a mother - and Raemus - a 'grown' soldier who is supposed to be incapable of emotions, who also has his own agenda.

Like I said, this is the first book, but you hit the ground running. Within the first few pages, you get that there are factions at work, all with their own motives, and not all gelling together. Rowan Bishop is able to write the story whilst not giving away any pertinent details until the absolute moment when they are necessary.

With humour, steam, an amazing (albeit instant!) connection between Raemus and Akyra, plus more action than you can shake a stick at, there is something here for all Sci Fi lovers to enjoy.

Well written, with no editing or grammatical errors to disrupt the reading flow, this book was very enjoyable, and I definitely recommend it. Looking forward to reading more in this series.

What show from your childhood would you love to bring back?

I'm going to spin this question a little. Instead of "show," I'm going to answer "character." What character from my childhood would I bring back?

Because when it comes to reconnecting to my childhood, a practice I encourage everyone to do now and then, the process always leads me to characters. After all, I crammed my childhood imagination full of them. Good guys. Bad gals. I loved them, and like so many bibliophiles, my closest friends were the characters from stories.

So! Who's the one character I'd want to meet all over again? If only for, say, one day?

As in Calvin & Hobbes.

That little guy.

With Calvin, every encounter was an explosion of ingenuity, of fascination, of curiosity. He taught me to explore the universe around me without fear, even if the universe was an afternoon of looking under rocks. He taught me to wander through the weirdest, looniest corridors of my imagination, which in turn kept me, as an adult, receptive to anything my convoluted subconscious wanted to throw at me. He taught me to love little things. He taught me to shun convention. He taught me never to trust what mom served me for dinner.

He was carpe diem's embodiment, living each day to the fullest, never being satisfied until his passions and curiosities were satiated—even if that curiosity was learning to juggle with chainsaws. He never stopped asking the big questions, even at the bottom of the recurring metaphoric toboggan ride. He made funny faces. He danced. He loved his best friend unconditionally, even when they were trying to pound each other in to the sandbox.

What other lessons would I want my younger self to learn? What lessons do I think other adults need? Somehow, that little naked dude running away from the bath had it all. And I miss him.

I wish I had him back.

I think we all do.

All her life, Rowan Bishop has thrown herself into both romance and science fiction every chance she could, so it was destiny that she’d fall in love with the growing subgenre of science fiction romance.

Consequently, she stepped away from her retail career to focus on her dream of writing full-time. The new girl on SFR scene, she brings her electrifying love stories and her naughty fantasies to our galaxy.

Rowan Bishop is her penname.
