Synopsis:

Don’t you wish sometimes that you could just close your eyes and start again? With two counts of murder under her belt and Detective Davis after her, teenager Lilly Lessard has done just that. She’s taken her dead friend, Janine Kenny’s ID and scholarship and she’s off to California.

But when a traffic accident leaves her with amnesia and only Janine’s ID in her pocket, things take a turn for the surreal. Her caseworker wants to know why her memories don’t match her history. The hospital candy stripper has noticed her hair appears blonde at the roots when it should be black. And who is this man who wants to help her get to California, who is willing to sneak her out in the dead of night? Can he help her get back some of her dead memories?

They were seated in a therapy room, Janine on one side facing the window with him on the other facing the door. He had laid her thick, blue folder on the table between them, making a big show of it. It was a trust action to let her know he didn’t own her information. She wasn’t a prisoner. That said, Bryan knew, if she reached for it, he would make a grab for it first.
He said, ‘You know I called your old home to see if anyone there knew Cassandra Stephenson, the girl from TV and that no one did?’ He pulled the file towards him to take out a slip of paper. ‘Well, the story doesn’t end there. I managed through some connections, to get ahold of her agent.’ He paused and looked up to meet her eyes, but Janine was picking at her black nail tips. ‘Basically, I emailed the guy and explained that these are very special circumstances and asked him to ask her, Cassandra Stephenson, if she knew you.’ He waited a moment for a response but didn’t get one. ‘How exciting is that, to imagine that you might know a real Hollywood star, that they might be the person who opens the door to all your memories?’
‘But you said that no one knew her at the place where I use to live.’
‘Yes, I did, but...’
‘So, why are you doing it? Is it like a vicarious thing? Do you want a reason to contact her, or do you think maybe I know her and I don’t know the people from the children’s home?’
Bryan shifted in his seat. She was eighteen and he was in his forties, but something about the way she talked seemed to get him by the septum and drag him back to every hideous high school dance ever. Was that normal? Were all teenagers like that these days?
He shuffled his papers.
‘We’re still trying to get some of your old friends and staff down from the children’s home. And we’re looking into some animal therapy. Because you remember, you really loved their dog, Burger. Well, you don’t remember, but the woman up there did say, you loved that dog.’

No reaction. Bryan waited, aware that the fake smile on his face was starting to crack.
