RELEASE BLITZ & REVIEWS - Necromancist (Seven Forbidden Arts #6) by Charmaine Pauls

(SPIRIT – Book 6, Seven Forbidden Arts)

Nine years ago he took her virginity. Now he’s back for more – revenge.

Alice Jones has loved one man only–the man who stripped her from her clothes and defenses to leave her vulnerable and cold, the man who took her virginity and went downstairs for ‘a glass of water’ never to return. After nine years the once poor and shamed Ivan Kray is back in London, now a world-famous rock star. He is wealthy, successful, surrounded by millions of fans, and built like a machine while she is struggling, single, overweight, and has to borrow affection from her neighbor’s cat. To make matters worse, he blames her and her family for driving him away. This time round, Ivan doesn’t come to her with gentle caresses and roses. He comes with vengeance and thorns that will either purge or destroy her.

A malnourished toddler barely kept from starving by a nursing dog, Ivan Kray grows up into a hard and emotionally scarred man with a golden voice and a cursed art. Suffering from visions and voices in his head, he finds peace in Alice Jones’ heart and naked arms, only to be knocked down once again. When she chooses her upper-class family over him, he slaves for nine long years to climb to the top of the ladder with one purpose only–to take revenge. He swore he’d be her first and last, and he isn’t a man to break his promises. His plans of submitting Alice to his will are hampered when someone tries to kill him. The sinister attempts on his life are more than the actions of a fan gone fanatic. When his hunter uses Alice to achieve his ominous goal, Ivan must acknowledge his true feelings and put his skills as necromancist to the ultimate test. Will his unusual ability be enough to save Alice before it’s too late to tell her the truth?

Although this is Book 6 (SPIRIT) of the Seven Forbidden Art series, the story also reads as a standalone. For best reading enjoyment and character insight it is recommended that the series be read in chronological order.

4 out of 5 (very good)

Necromancist is the sixth book in the Seven Forbidden Arts series. You could read it as a standalone, but you will definitely get more from it if you have read the others. There is an overall story arc which gives you extra information on characters and situations.

Now, onto the book itself. This review is hard for me to write, mainly because I'm afraid it will come out sounding all whingy and whiney, which is not my intention at all. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I do find it to be a wonderful addition to the series. However, there were parts of it that I didn't like very much... and I'm not entirely sure why. Let me explain.

Ivan and Alice are both broken individuals. Broken by time, by associations, by events. They are both pretending that everything is ok in their own way. Alice by 'doing her job' the best way she can, and Ivan by becoming a rock star, albeit an eccentric one for reasons only he knows. When these two meet, it is explosive! The heat between them is instantaneous, and a follow on from how it used to be. They both have issues with each other, and how their relationship ended the first time.

The thing for me is they never really discussed this, so it just festers between them. The only time it is mentioned is as a preview to sex between them. Now the sex is also hot, but there is a lot of 'possession' and 'pain' involved. This is the bit that I'm really unsure of, because I've read "Dark" books, with Alpha Males, BDSM, even dub con, and it's never bothered me. Something about Alice and her need for pain though, I don't know...

Anyway, moving on. The story itself I thoroughly enjoyed! Learning more about Cain, seeing the rest of the team, and meeting a character who I presume will be in the next book, was brilliant. After a surprise part of the story, I can honestly say that I enjoyed it more.

This book was very well written, with no editing or grammatical errors to disrupt the reading flow. As I have previously said, it's a great addition to the series, and I have no hesitation in recommending it as I feel the issues I had were specifically that - my issues!

5 out of 5 (exceptional)

Ivan Cray is back for his revenge. He never thought that revenge would cause his heart to heal. Alice Jones broke that heart when she choose her family over him.

This is book 6 in the series. I would recommend you do read these in order, there is much moving from book to book, and its carried on here.

I really enjoyed this one. But not quite as much as the rest. Not really sure why though! I still give it 5 stars.

Alice and Ivan have history; Ivan took Alice's heart and virginity 9 years ago, and left right after. Alice never really forgave him for that. But Ivan never forgave Alice for choosing her family over him. There is a lot of misunderstanding and crossed wires between these two. It makes for frustrating reading at points, since its clear to everyone but them, that they love each other!

It's super hot and sexy, scary in places with Ivan's gift of seeing ghosts. Some characters are laid to rest, some are still on the run! I swear, Godfrey HAS to get his comeuppance soon! The man has more lives than a blooming cat!!

We meet a character briefly who will appear in a later book, and I am really looking forward to that one!

Like I said, still a 5 star read, just not quite as much a one as the others.

5 stars.
