NBTM & #GIVEAWAY - Lies I Live By by Lauren Sabel

YA Thriller

These are the facts: My name is Callie Sinclair. I am seventeen years old. I live in San Francisco. I love my boyfriend, Charlie. I work for a secret governmental agency. I am a psychic spy. This romantic, action-packed twist on the classic spy novel is perfect for fans of Ally Carter’s Embassy Row series or for any reader who enjoys cinematic writing and stories of romance and intrigue.

At seventeen, Callie is the government’s youngest psychic spy, trained to track dangerous people and weapons in her visions. When another young—and handsome and witty—psychic joins the agency, Callie’s personal and professional lives get messy all at once. If she can’t find a way to change the events she’s seen in her visions, she could lose the people she loves most . . . and her mind. Literally.

Richly painted against the backdrop of San Francisco and Berkeley, Lauren Sabel’s enthralling novel captures the thrill of exploring a unique power in a dangerous world.

Right now, all over the world, there are psychics searching for dangerous weapons, biological hazards, serial killers. But you’ll never know about it. The government will deny it.  “That is not reliable information,” they will say, not mentioning the hundreds of psychics behind closed doors, accurately finding kidnapped people and murder victims.  They won’t tell you about how some minds can see below the ground, above the earth, backwards and forwards in time. And they won’t tell you that some of them are housed in mental institutions, or that one of them is your neighbor, or that one of them is below the legal voting age. Or that, for those people, life is a secret they can’t share, so they are always alone, except for one place: In their own minds.

What are you keeping a secret?

Sometimes it seems like everything in my life is a secret, but that’s not completely true. Charlie knows the truth about some things, like how I feel when my mom doesn’t have time for me or won’t talk about my dad.  Jasper knows other truths, like what I do to get into a psychic viewing state or how I react to seeing people die in my visions. But most people know nothing: to them, my whole life is a secret.

Is there anyone in your life that you are attracted to?

I am equally attracted to Jasper and Charlie for totally different reasons. Jasper makes me feel like I’m flying and burning at the same time: Charlie makes me feel like I’m grounded on the earth, relaxed in his love. I want to feel all of these things, but sometimes everyone has to make hard choices.

What does this person know about you that no one else does?

Charlie knows how I feel about my dad leaving me when I was a toddler, and then never bothering to contact me for the past fifteen years. He knows how I hold my tongue around my mom when the conversation about fathers comes up, because I don’t want to hurt her.

Jasper knows how insecure I can be about what I see in my visions, and how I don’t always know whether I’m seeing the truth or just what I’m afraid of. He knows, like no one else, how giving the CIA the wrong information can be a death warrant for people across the world, and even in your own home.

How do you decide if you can trust someone?

It takes a long time. I guess it’s a matter of talking to that person, digging into his history and his reasons for what he does. One thing I’ve learned is that if a person is capable of intentionally hurting someone else, he can do it to you too. So when someone talks about his friends or exes in a negative way, I really listen.

When you walk into a room what do you notice first? Second?

I first notice the exits that may be hidden from plain view, like air shafts and heating vents. Then I notice the more obvious exists, like doors.

How do you learn best?

I learn best by watching and trying not to judge what I see.  Indigo taught me that analyzing what I’m witnessing is the worst way to actually understand what someone else is doing, or why.  So much is hidden in everyday life, and it is only by opening ourselves up to the possibility that we have no idea about other people’s reasons for doing things can we start to understand the truth.

What are you most afraid of?

The people I love dying when I could have prevented their deaths. Losing people is one thing, but the guilt attached to being aware of it and still unable to stop it from happening haunts my every waking moment.

If you had one wish, what would it be?

My wish always used to be that I wanted to be normal; to not have this psychic power so that I didn’t have to see bad things happening to people I love. But now, after all I’ve been through, I think I would wish to be able to still see those bad things, but be able to prevent them from happening.

What are you especially proud of in your life?

I’m proud that I can help people. Sometimes just seeing things happen, even things I don’t understand, allows me to pass on information that helps the CIA save lives. Even though I rarely know what exactly I’ve done to help someone, sometimes I catch a glimpse of a news story or hear a piece of Indigo’s phone conversation that makes me realize that the intel I’ve found may have saved lives or changed a situation in a helpful way.

If you could change anything about your life what would it be?

I wish I didn’t have to lie to my mom. She loves me, even if she doesn’t always know how to show me her love. She deserves to know the truth. But she also deserves to live, and telling her the truth about me could threaten her life in a way I can’t ever allow to happen.

Lauren Sabel lives in the quirky dark spaces of her mind, and she tries to shed light on these spaces in her books. After publishing VIVIAN DIVINE IS DEAD in Summer 2014 with Katherine Tegen Books, an imprint of Harper Collins, she confronted her lifelong fear of being psychic by writing LIES I LIVE BY (pub May 2016). Since in this YA thriller, teenage psychic spy Callie Sinclair works undercover for the government, forced to hide her real identity from everyone she loves, Lauren is now certain she’s on the CIA watch list.
