BLOG TOUR, GIVEAWAY, & REVIEW: Black Dawn by Cristin Harber

What happens when nothing is as it seems?

Lexi Dare is on a one-woman mission to stay alive. Both at home and at work. Because how did she end up with a ring on her finger and an abuser in bed as she readies to hit the high point in her career? Everything should be perfect. Amazing job. Handsome fiancé. It's all a disaster.

Parker Black is the brains behind Titan Group, an elite security firm. In his world, everything is ordered and controlled, except what he feels for his buddy’s girl. Something in her eye screams for help, but he has no idea what.

When Lexi disappears, Parker realizes what he should have known. The lines blur between friendships and work, and they must find each other to survive a terror attack that only Lexi can stop.

Black Dawn can be read as a standalone and does not have a cliffhanger.

This book was quite different for Cristin’s writing in that it was pretty dark for the first part of it. I don’t have a history of abuse but it was hard for me to read.  It makes it hard to get into the story and get to the better parts, but I promise, there are better parts to come.  Another pretty big difference is that this book in the series doesn’t have a lot of action as Parker and Lex are computer geniuses.  So unlike the rest of the crew, they aren’t all about the guns and fighting, but rather getting into the computer tracking, disarming weapons, hacking security systems, etc. These two things made it really hard for me to get into the book which was quite disappointing as I absolutely love Cristin’s writing. Due to the non-fighting, there wasn’t much about the rest of the gang, except for snippets here and there and a bit more at the end.
Looking at the story on a completely single story basis, it was a decent story. It fit Parker and Lex, which of course it should have.  It showcases their life, hacking computers, databases, websites and getting paid to do so.  It was based more on Parker’s personal side of things, which didn’t involve much of Titan, but rather Parker’s “darker” side of things. The story was well written and flowed nicely and had incredible detail to be able to picture the scenes envision what was going on. There were some times where I was on the edge of my seat or where my heart was breaking for Parker or Lex. There were definitely some good happy moments too. It was hard to get a good read on Lex as her character is still very withdrawn and maybe scared and it’s understandably so with what she went through in the story. Maybe we will get some more interaction with her and the girls in a future installment thought.
I think this story is going to different for each person, whether you love it, like it, or it’s not for you. If any kind of abuse is a trigger for you, then I’d recommend double thinking this selection. That part is hard to read.
