excerpt

“I am not getting coffee with you.”
Quill scowled. “Why not?”
“Why not?” She laughed.
“Yeah. Why not. You don’t like coffee?”
Cori was sure he didn’t have a clue why she was turning him down. In fact, she kind of wanted to accept his invitation, but when she looked at his confused expression, it just made it worse. “Maybe because I saw you and your girlfriend last night in the hall.”
“She isn’t my girlfriend.”
“You know that doesn’t really help your case.”
He frowned. “Yeah I guess it doesn’t”
Cori bent down to collect her music folder.
“You know you shouldn’t be so high and mighty. You were the rocker chick dressed in a skirt so short she gave the front row pussy shots all night, but apparently you have a set of higher morals when it comes to drinking coffee.”
“I was not giving pussy shots. Whatever the hell that is. And even if I was, it’s different than sticking something in a pussy.” She crossed her arms over her chest.
“You afraid?” His cocky tone was back.
“Of your herpes ass? I don’t think so.”
Quill suppressed a laugh. “I don’t think you can get herpes on your ass.”
“I wouldn’t know.”
“Nor would I. Coffee?” He tried again. “You can’t get herpes from coffee.” Quill’s gaze dropped to her hands.

Never believing he deserved more, Quill goes through life taking what he can and avoiding any meaningful relationships. Until he gets a job at a local guitar shop and discovers a talent for making music. Soon Quill meets Assad, a broody bass player who lives by the motto “love has no boundaries”. Struggling with nightmares of an abusive past and where exactly his heart lies, Quill has to decide how far he’s willing to go to find love.

I dont usually copy the blurb, but I couldn't word it any better and still say it and hold it true, so, I did here. Don't let the title of this book fool into some peace, because there really isn't any, not for Quill, Assad, or Quill's sister Ren.

Quill is using drugs, alcohol and sex to get over some horrific childhood abuse, but refusing to talk to anyone. He lands a job at a music store and is finally getting somehwere. Asaad plays in a band he saw and is totally smitten with Quill. But Quill wont allow himself to be loved. Assad pushes and Quill pushes back, until they both snap.

What stands out for me, is how painful this book is to read. The abuse that both Quill and Ren suffered as children and how that follows them into adulthood, and how they suffer now, and how they both deal with it is shocking. Extremely well written, I cannot fault that. I really can't.

From what I can see, this is book two. Book one, Serenity, is Ren's story. But she is by no means happy in this book, which leads me to think, and hope, that there will be more from this pair. I really do need to see them both happy, but I can see that it will be a long hard road they walk to get there.

I would like to say, there should be a warning on the blurb. An over 18 one at least. The subject matter is dark, and rip you apart. Drug/alcohol/sex abuse and self harming are all prevelent and some readers may find this is too much for them. Book one is biiled as upper young adult, I can't in all honesty, say that this is any sort of Young Adult book, I really can't.

5 stars.
