Synopsis

Cameron's Law

Vampires are people, too.

Cameron's Law has made all supernatural creatures legal citizens, and the boy next door has suddenly become the werewolf next door. With Sadie Stanton, vampire and one of the public faces of the legislation, calling the little town of Adelheid, Connecticut home, it can't help but be a focal point for these once mythical beings.

But when vampires start attacking werewolves without provocation, Adelheid draws the attention of those that would seek to have Cameron's Law repealed and would send the preternaturals back into the shadows they used to hide in, but without the safety of their anonymity and their law.

Can Sadie keep the city's two biggest species from descending into chaos and war before it brings all of them to harm? And can she do it when she herself gets thrust into the spotlight?

When Forever Died

Forever is a long time.

The life of a hunter is a lonely one. Perhaps more for Dakota than others in her line of work. Not only is she better than anyone else at chasing down the things that go bump in the night, but her past chases her with the same tenacity.

She's built walls around her solitary existence and that's the way she likes it, but the past never sleeps. When she's hired to hunt an ex-lover for murder, it's just the first in a string of memories that will bring Dakota's past, present and future into a collision course.

And when she agrees to take on a second case and hunt down an Ancient, a vampire over one thousand years old, it unleashes circumstances onto that collision that will shake the foundation of everything she's built and force her, for the first time in a long while, to look to others.

Can she survive it, like she's survived these past four centuries? Or will the weight of it all finally crush her?

Written All Over Her

One word can change the story of your life forever.

Abduction. Torture. Surrender.

Eleven months from her adolescence have framed thirty-one years of Detective Nykk Marlowe’s life. Despite the trauma of her past, and the unique physical scars it left her with, she’s built a career as a detective for the Adelheid Police Department.

Her personal life might only consist of caring for her sister and a pet rabbit, but she accepts that.

She accepts that she’ll never be able to be like “normal” people, even the supernatural ones. As long as she can keep the past where it belongs, she’s okay.

But when the body of a teenage girl shows up with the same scars that Nykk sees in the mirror every day, her “okay” life gets turned upside down and she’s forced to confront the past she’s been looking away from for sixteen years.

And when it turns out there’s already more than one victim, the pressure’s on to stop the killer before any more girls are tortured, mutilated, and murdered.

Cameron's Law4 out of 5 (very good)

I received this book from Masquerade Book Tours in return for a fair and honest review.

This story is about a vampire who 'came out' and, along with a close friend, helped to revolutionise the paranormal movement. This was not without consequences and, as such, Sadie works away the night trying hard to grow her paranormal business.

From the very start, you are in the thick of the action and find out just how inconvenient being staked can be. Although not life-threatening (she is dead, after all) she reports it to the police and deals with a new detective who becomes the love interest. However, their romance certainly doesn't overshadow the rest of the story. In fact, for most of it, they're not dating as she is a suspect on multiple murders plus there's the whole cahooney of vampire and werewolf attacks. She doesn't really have time for romance!

Sadie is sharp, quick-witted and sarcastic - character aspects that I love in either the main male or female. Vance is the perfect foil for her and certainly can give as much as he takes. The supporting characters are all interesting in their own right but help to make the mystery part of this book more interesting.

A humorous and intriguing start to a new series. Recommended for all Paranormal Mystery Romance fans.

When Forever Died4 out of 5 (very good)

I received this book from Masquerade Book Tours in return for a fair and honest review.

This is Dakota's story - a hunter with a heart of gold... if she ever lets you get close enough to find out for yourself. She has been around for centuries and lived through things you can only imagine. She is tough, no-nonsense and full of attitude. I loved her.

Dakota is having trouble adjusting to being part of a team as she has spent so long being by herself but with Sadie and Madison there to help, she'll get there - whether she wants to or not.

Usually Dakota will only take on one job at a time but after accepting a job to hunt down a vampire, Dakota is asked by the police to hunt for an Ancient (a vampire over 1,000 years). This is too good an opportunity to miss so she accepts but soon realises that they might be closer related than she had thought.

There are twists and turns aplenty in this book as we find out more of Dakota's past in the form of flashbacks and how things intermingle and become relevant in the present day. Ex-lovers, twisted sisters, stalkers, not to mention a whole host of Norse mythology. It's all in here and makes for a gripping read. Definitely recommended.

Voracious3 out of 5 (good)

I received this book from Masquerade Book Tours in return for a fair and honest review.

After loving the first two books in this series, I was hoping for the same with this one. What I got was something else.

'D' is a character that starts off quite obnoxious although he does get some endearing traits further in the book. He is Turned against his will and then the vampire who turned him is killed. He goes to Sadie for help because she is the only vampire that he 'knows' and Sadie agrees to help him. She gives him both a job and also the name and address of Coven House.

As the story progresses the plot moves on. However, I never actually found out why D was chosen in the first place, apart from he looked strong and could resist the pull of the succubi. You also never find out his name and he just goes by D throughout. What was this voracious hunger he had? Why was it easier to control once he was a vampire?

An enjoyable book but not as good as the first two.

Written All Over Her4 out of 5 (very good)

I received this book from Masquerade Book Tours in return for a fair and honest review.

This is Nykk's story and we are with her every step of the way as she tries to catch a serial murderer who is taking girls and experimenting on them in ways that Nykk is only too well aware of. She thought she was the only one. They told her that he was dead. So why are bodies turning up, looking exactly like Nykk? This is a raw telling of her history and you can see how it affects her everyday life.

Vance and Nykk are just starting the case when two FBI officers turn up - one of whom Nykk knew before she was kidnapped. They all start working the case together in the hope of catching the murderer before another girl is killed. This is an intricate and compelling story, not one to be read lightly. The plot is tightly woven and will leave you quickly turning the next page to find out what comes next.

This world that has been created is multi-faceted and a delight to read about. Not only do we have vampires and shifters but also animators, summoners, hunters etc. There is a richness and depth to the world that makes it all the more real. This book is the best so far in my opinion.

Disposable People4 out of 5 (very good)

I received this book from Masquerade Book Tours in return for a fair and honest review.

This is a story from Vance's perspective. The police are trying to find evidence against one of the big vampire families but their undercover agent has been discovered and killed. Vance and Sam get the unenviable task of going in after him to find out what happened. Things don't go according to plan and Vance is taken. He awakes in a new kind of hell and can only hope and pray that Sam got away and Dakota is even now looking for him.

This is once again written exceedingly well, complete with the intensity and rawness that I have come to expect. It is also incredibly poignant in places, including the part of the story which gives the book its title - "We are not disposable people".

Loved this book, loved the series and I hope to see more from the residents of Adelheid soon. Highly recommended.

Author Bio

Born a Connecticut Yankee in nobody's court, Mia Darien grew up to brave snow and talk fast. She started reading when she was three and never looked back, soon frequently falling asleep with a book under her cheek. (Something she still does, though these days it's her Nook as often as a paperback.)

At eleven, she discovered "Night Mare" by Piers Anthony and entered the world of grown-up fantasy fiction and it was all over from there. She started writing at fourteen, then met vampires as a teenager and the concept for what would become Adelheid was soon born. Epic fantasy remains her first love, but she enjoys writing whatever stories come to mind in any genre.

Now she loves both writing and helping her indie community with her freelancing. A geek till the end, she enjoys role-play by email games and World of Warcraft when she has the time. Married to her very own Named Man of the North, she lives with him, their mini-tank (also known as their son) and pets, who usually act more childish than the child.
